It was philanthropist Phoebe Apperson Hearst who gave added financial support and championed the YWCA’s decision to build a summer camp conference grounds here in the West. She introduced the YWCA directors to the Pacific Improvement Company who eventually donated 30 acres of land for the camp. Hearst generously offered furnishings for Asilomar’s first building, dining tent and tent houses.
